Verbier AccommodationVerbier features some of the finest and most luxurious chalets in the Alps and is an ideal place for a ski chalet holiday. There’s also a dozen or more hotels and around 70 apartments. Whether you stay in you stay in plus chalet, a luxury hotel or a bunk bed at the sports centre, there’s superb skiing and lively apres-ski for all, at a price.
Verbier has over 15,000 guest beds in total, making it one of the biggest Swiss ski resorts in terms of visitor numbers, as well as size of ski domain. The resort grumbles about the proportion of privately owned property, though, much of which remains empty for most of the year and therefore doesn’t contribute much – relatively – to the local economy. Almost wherever you stay, a morning bus ride or hike uphill to the main lifts is part of the package. It’s less of an issue on the way home as it’s all downhill and there are several obligatory après-ski stops along the main drag. With any central accommodation it’s pot-luck whether street noise (of the 4am après-ski or 5am snow clearing variety) is an issue.
Of Verbier’s hotels, the new W Verbier next to the cable car and Chalet de L’Adrien by the Savoleyres lift, both 5-star, are the plushest hotels in town. More modest but comfortable and well located is the Hotel Hermitage on the town square – one of several in this location that offers a comfortable (usually small) room, a good breakfast and reasonable half-board option. At the other end of the scale, out to the west of Verbier town centre is a bunk house in the sports centre – the perfect budget option for young freeriders; use of the swimming pool is an extra enticement ithe chance to sleep in a former nuclear shelter doesn’t clinch it.
