Engelberg has a good selection of hotels and apartments and an efficient free shuttle bus service between the village and the ski lifts for the two different ski areas, although there is some accommodation within easy walking distance and even some ski-in, ski-out accommodation up the mountain. Down in the town most of the hotels are 3-star but with a few 4-star and budget options. There are also plenty of apartments for self-catering holidays, including some luxury ones.
Engelberg offers a reasonable selection of hotels. The Hotel Waldegg has long had 4-star status but is now joined in that grade by the handsome Bellevue Terminus, (see photo) which has been upgraded from three stars, and which is just as comfy although it lacks the Waldegg’s spa and swimming pool. Location-wise, the Waldegg is near the foot of the slopes for the Brunni ski area but is the wrong side of town for the Titlis/Trubsee ski area. The Bellevue is close to the centre of the town near the railway station, so is about a 10 minutes’ walk from both lifts – a nice warm-up stroll for some, but too far for others.
If quick access to the Titlis/Trubsee ski area is all important, and you don’t care about nightlife or luxuries or getting into town easily, the ski-in, ski-out Berghotel Trübsee, which is an ungraded mountain inn located one lift up the mountain and only reachable by cable-car, is a contender. Even more isolated but otherwise similar is the Bärghuis Jochpass which is one mountain further away on Jochstock. Both have saunas.
A less extreme choice, but still handy for the Titlis/Trubsee ski area is the Hotel Cathrin (3-star). It’s on the edge of town about 100m from the lift base-station, has a sauna and gym, and is well liked by previous guests. The 3 star Hotel Bänklialp is almost as close and it too has a suna and good customer ratings. The Hotel Crystal and Hotel Belmont are also popular 3 star hotels that are within about 5 minutes walk of the lift, and are about the same distance from the centre of town.
If you don’t mind commuting to the lift by bus, both the 3-star Alpenclub and the 3-star Hotel Garni Hostatt are well liked by their users . The 3-star Hotel Hahnenblick is also a bus ride away from the Titlis lift but well placed for the Brunni ski area (good for families). If you want somewhere quieter and have your own car, the Sporthotel Eienwäldli has an excellent spa for a 3-star hotel. It is on the very edge of the resort but as it’s on the same side as the Titlis lift it should only be a three minute commute each day. More 3 star hotels are in the panel at the bottom of the page.
At the budget end of the market, the following simple ungraded hotels and guesthouses are all popular with previous guests: Spannort Inn (central, near thes train station about 600m from the Titlis lift); Hotel Espen (about 10 mins walk from the Titlis lift); and Gasthaus Schwand (up in the hills on the Brunni side but not close to the pistes; lovely views though).
There are dozens of self catering apartments to choose from all over Engelberg and beyond. Apartment Birkenstrasse 52, Apartment Birkenstrasse 54 and Apartment Birkenstrasse 70 are all very close to the Titlis lift so tend to be popular with keen skiers.
