Grimentz village is prettier and more interesting than Zinal and offers a better choice of accommodation. Both offer impressive panoramic views of the surrounding mountains are justly proud of their heritage and include historic centres unspoiled by modern development.

Where to stay in Grimentz-Zinal?

Grimentz

Grimentz, the larger of the two villages, is perfectly situated between the Grimentz and Zinal ski areas. More developed than Zinal it offers a wider choice of accommodation including luxury chalets and apartments and new developments under construction. It’s also very pretty and boasts an impressive historic centre (an open-air living museum) which stands apart from the commercial centre of the village. Grimentz also offers more shops, bars and restaurants and is more aesthetically appealing except for the new lift station – a modernist mix of green glass and concrete – at odds with its surroundings, but great for accessing both ski areas! The steep-sided valley features hundreds of pretty chalets, many of which are a long walk from the centre of the village, and with no more land in Grimentz available for development, property and accommodation prices can be expected to rise.

Zinal

Zinal, the “Pearl of the Alps”, is architecturally the less obviously pretty village of the two, but offers even more spectacular mountain views. The village is spread out along a flat valley floor and features a small historic centre surrounded by more commercial development, a few characterful historic hotels (rated 2-3 stars) and fewer apartments and chalets to choose from. A gondola on the edge of the village takes you to the excellent ski area above Zinal with the choice of either skiing the long and mostly black Chamois run or cable car down to Grimentz, then gondola up to the ski area at Grimentz.

The traditional 3-star Hotel Restaurant de Moiry in the historic centre of Grimentz has been run by the Salamin family for several generations.
