Getting to Crans-Montana

Crans Montana is easily reached in around two and a half hours by car from Geneva airport (180km). Sion airport is even closer but has fewer flights. Train transfers are also possible, completing the journey on  the funicular railway from Sierre to Montana Gare.

Getting to Crans-Montana by Rail

It’s an easy, scenic journey by train from Geneva to Crans-Montana via Sierre, with direct trains running from Geneva Airport to Sierre (and on to Brig) approximately every 30 minutes. It’s about 2 hours 30 minutes to Sierre, then a five-minute Sierre Montana Crans shuttle bus or a 370m walk (follow the red line) to the funicular, which climbs from Sierre to Montana Gare in 12-20 minutes. From the railway station in Sierre it’s a five-minute shuttle bus ride to the SMC Funicular, then a 12-20minute journey up the mountain by funicular to Montana Gare. Depending where you’re staying in Montana, or up to two kilometres away in Crans, you’ll need a hotel pick-up or a taxi to meet you on arrival in Montana.

If you don’t want to take the funicular, you can take a bus (45 minutes) from Sierre, or order a taxi, but the funicular is much quicker and easier with enjoyable views across the valley to Zinal.

Alternatively, if you’re flying to Bern, take the train to Visp where you can catch a train to Sierre., then follow the directions above.

Driving to Crans-Montana

Crans Montana is a big resort and generally there is enough parking near the lifts and at hotels, so driving from the airport can be a good option. The route from the airports is easy, except for the the last 14-km from Sierre to Crans-Montana is on a winding mountain-road.  There are routes from Bern that involve going on a car transporter  through the mountain.

Most of the journey is motorway, connecting with the A9 which goes to Sierre. The last 14-km from Sierre to Crans-Montana is a winding mountain-road. If you’re driving on Swiss motorways remember to buy a Swiss Motorway road tax vignette, which is valid for one year.
