Getting to Montafon

The Montafon valley in south Vorarlberg, Austria, is easy to get to. With a choice of three airports within 100-170km, transfers by road or rail take less than two hours. Montafon is good for weekend skiing and short breaks as well as for longer skiing holidays.

Nearest Airports to Montafon

Friedrichshafen, Innsbruck and Zurich airports are all within one to two hours’ drive of Montafon. Distances below are from the airports to Schruns, the biggest resort town in Montafon. Allow between 10-20km and as many minutes to drive from Schruns to the smaller villages of St Gallenkirch, Gargellen and Gaschurn which are situated higher up the valley.

Friedrichshafen – 100km / 1 hour
Innsbruck – 135km / 1 hour 35 minutes
Zurich – 170km / 1 hour 45 minutes

The majority of flights to Friedrichshafen are from other airports in Germany. Innsbruck has slightly more international flights, but Zurich is only slightly further away and is served by many more airlines, with easy onward transfers to the resort by road and rail.

Getting to Montafon by Rail

The easiest and fastest train connection from Zurich airport is the direct train to Bregenz (end destination Munich) then take the train from Bregenz to Schruns (total journey time 2 hours 30 minutes). There’s a similarly fast train via Bludenz which involves changing trains at Zurich main station and at Bludenz (total journey time 2 hours 40 minutes). If not staying in Schruns you will need to take a taxi from Schruns railway station to your hotel.

From Innsbruck Hbf in the city centre there are frequent fast Inter City trains to Bludenz from where there are regular trains to Schruns. Total journey time between 2 hours 15 minutes and 3 hours but you also need allow time to transfer by bus or taxi from Innsbruck airport to the city centre.

You can also transfer by train from Friedrichshafen airport to Schruns, but not so easily as you have to change trains in Friedrichshafen, Lindau and either Bregenz or Bludenz. Total journey time from Friedrichshafen airport to Schruns is between 2-3 hours depending on connections.

Montafon Valley Railway & Bus Services

The Montafon railway and local buses are free for skiers holding a valid Montafon lift pass and there are regular bus services between Schruns and other ski villages, and from resorts to and from the main valley ski lifts.

Driving to Montafon

It’s a fast motorway (toll road) route most of the way from the airports to exit 61 then 10km or so along Silvretta Bundesstrasse to Schruns.

From Friedrichshafen take B30/B31 direction Lindau / Eriskirch, then A96/A14 to Lindau / Bregenz and continue along A14 as far as exit 61 Bludenz Montafon and take the B188 Silvretta Bundesstrasse which runs the length of the Montafon valley to Schruns and other ski resorts in Montafon – 100km.

From Innsbruck follow A12/E60/S16 direction Bregenz as far as exit 61 and the B188 Slivretta Bundesstrasse – 135km to Schruns.

From Zurich follow A1/A4/E41 towards Schaffhausen/Sankt Gallen leaving the motorway at exit 3 and cross the border into Austria via Diepoldsau Hohenems then take the A14/E16 direction Innsbruck / Bregenz as far as exit 61 and the B188 Silvretta Bundesstrasse.
