Getting to Via Lattea

Turin is the nearest airport for the Via Lattea ski resorts of Montgenevre, Sauze d’Oulx, Sestriere, Claviere, Pragelato, San Sicario  and Cesana Torinese. Airport to resort transfers take about 90 minutes. The train station in Oulx offers a rail alternative for those who prefer not to fly.

The closest airports to Sauze d’Oulx, Montgenevre, Sestriere, and the rest of the Via Lattea

The most convenient airport for all the Milky Way resorts is Turin Caselle. Many airlines, including BA, EasyJet and Ryan Air, fly there.

Chambery, Lyon and Geneva are alternative gateway airports. Grenoble is actually the closest airport to Montgenevre as the crow flies, but the D1091 road has to wriggle up and down a high altiude pass on its way through La Grave and Briancon. In good weather this is time consuming, and in bad weather it may be undriveable. Turin or Chambery are better options.

If you hire a car at Turin or Chambery airports it’s an easy motorway drive to Oulx. The motorway transfer to Oulx is 85km from Turin airport (just over an hour’s drive) or 137km from Chambery airport (approx. 1 ½ hours), and the town of Oulx is between 10km and 20km from the Via Lattea ski resort villages. Driving all the way to the Via Lattea ski resorts

From either the UK (via the Frejus tunnel) or within Italy, take the E70/A32 motorway as far as Oulx. The roads from Oulx are well signed – Sauze and Jouvenceaux in one direction, and Cesana, Sestriere and Claviere in the other. Only the final stages of the journeys to the resorts of Sestriere, Sansicario, Pragelato and Claviere are on winding mountain roads.

If you’re driving to Montgenevre from Northern France or the UK, the route via the A43 to Modane and through the Frejus tunnel into Italy, crossing back into France after passing through Claviere, is normally quicker than driving all the way through France and approaching Montgenevre via the D1091 and N94. The total journey time from London is about 12.5 hours, and from Paris 7.5 hours, provided you miss the rush hour.
