Getting to Private: Aletsch Arena

The Aletsch Arena ski area features three car-free villages on a sunny plateau at 2,000 m. Getting to the Aletsch Arena from Bern, Zurich, and Geneva airports takes 2 to 3 hours by rail or 3 hours by road to one of three lift stations in the Rhone Valley. Then, a 10- or 20-minute gondola or cable car ride to Riederalp, Bettmeralp, and Fierscheralp.

Nearest International Airports to Aletsch Arena

Although Zurich International Airport is nearer, Geneva International Airport is a good alternative and, in some respects, easier or cheaper. For example, driving the shortest route via A6 from via A4 from Zurich involves tolls for tunnel trains.

From Geneva International Airport, it takes approximately 2 hours 25 minutes by road or around 3 hours by rail to the Rhone Valley lift stations at Mörel-Filet, Bettmeralp, or Fiesch. Then, it takes 10-20 minutes by gondola or cable car to the Aletsch Arena car-free villages of Riederalp, Bettmeralp, or Fiescheralp.

The drive from Milan Malpensa Airport to Mörel-Filet takes about 2 hours 15 mins (151 km), following the A8/A26 motorways and crossing into Switzerland via the scenic Simplon Pass. In winter, snow tires or chains are essential. If the pass is closed, a car train through the Simplon Tunnel offers an alternative route to Brig and then Mörel.

Frequent express trains and regular local connections enable easy rail transfers from the nearest airports to Brig or Fiesch, then change for regular regional rail connections. The approximate rail transfer times to Aletsch Arena (Mörel-Filet) are as follows:

  • By rail from Zurich Airport, 2 hours 50 minutes.
  • By rail from Geneva Airport, 3 hours.
  • By rail from Milan Malpensa Airport, 3 hours 15 minutes.

From Milan Malpensa Airport, the S50 train gets you to Gallarate in 30 minutes; then the RE4 train to Domodossola and the EC Basel train as far as Brig.

Depending on the train times and route, you can change trains at Visp or Brig for the local train services RE42 or RE43, which stop at Mörel, Bettmeralp Tal Station, and Fiesch.

The train from Mörel to Bettmeralp Talstation takes 10 minutes (one stop), and from Mörel to Fiesch takes about 20 minutes (four stops).

Private Transfers from Airports to Aletsch Arena

While rail transfer is recommended, families with young children or larger groups may prefer to book a private transfer from the airport. However, because the Aletsch Arena villages are car-free, you cannot book a door-to-door transfer unless you choose to stay in the valley, for example, at Fiesch.

Riederalp, Betteralp, and Fiescheralp are car-free and accessible only by gondola or cable car, so if you are driving to the Aletsch Arena, you must park nearby in the Rhone Valley.

Long-term parking is available at Mörel-Filet, the Bettmeralp Talstation and Fiesch.

The multi-storey car park in Mörel has 440 covered parking spaces next to the Riederalp West lift to Riederalp, and the car park at the Bettmeralp Talstation includes more than 550 covered spaces in the multi-storey car park and 1000 outdoor spaces. The public transport hub in Fiesch has 450 parking spaces just 100m from the lift station.

Gondola and Cable Car Connections to Aletsch Arena

When planning your journey to Aletsch Arena, remember that the final leg involves taking a gondola or cable car to reach your destination. The three valley lift stations in the Rhone Valley, each with a train station and long-term parking nearby, are just a few miles (5 minutes) apart:

  • Mörel-Filet for the Riederalp West gondola to Rideralp;
  • Bettmeralp Tal Station for the cable car to Bettmeralp;
  • Fiesch for the gondola to Fiescheralp.

Getting to Riederalp

  • Travel by train or drive to Mörel-Filet.
  • The Riederalp West gondola station is only 40 metres from the train station.
  • There are covered parking spaces next to the gondola station.

Getting to Bettmeralp

  • Travel by train or drive to Bettmeralp Talstation.
  • A cable car will take you from the valley station to Bettmeralp.
  • Covered and outdoor parking spaces are available 100 metres from the lift station.

Getting to Fiescheralp

  • Travel by train or drive to Fiesch.
  • A train station and a gondola lift are located within the same transport hub.
  • Parking is situated just 100 metres from the gondola to Fiescheralp.
