Apres Ski in St Anton am Arlberg

St Anton am Arlberg offers vibrant après-ski in a traditional Alpine setting, including legendary bars for partying, a diverse restaurant scene and other activities mainly oriented around winter sports.

St Anton am Arlberg Village

St Anton am Arlberg, the ski capital of Austria, is among the best ski resorts worldwide, and is renowned for vibrant apres-ski, as well as world-class skiing.

Situated between the main ski area of Gampen, Galzig and Valluga to the north, and Rendl to the south, St Anton extends eastwards for about 1 km to Nasserein, which offers a quieter alternative to bustling St Anton.

The railway line from Zurich to Vienna (and the Orient Express) used to pass right through the village centre but was moved to the south side of the village in 2000 to allow a bigger finishing area for the 2001 World Championships and to create space for the Arlberg-well.com conference and leisure centre.

Huge investment over the past 25+ years, including the landmark Galzigbhan and Rendlbahn lift stations, has transformed the village into a busy and hugely successful ski resort featuring many new designer boutique hotels, in addition to the long-established 4-star hotels. However, the village centre still retains an historic alpine charm and is pedestrianised.

Some old-time favourite bar/restaurants such as Bar Platzl and Funky Chicken are long gone, and The Underground on the Piste closed in 2024 (R.I.P. Joan Devey), and Pub 37 also permanently closed in 2024, but new trendy bars and restaurants continue to emerge.  Also, more sports shops to meet “the needs” of increasing numbers of sporty guests all year around, and a decline in the variety of small independent shops, sadly.

Apres Ski Bars in St Anton

St Anton’s vibrant apres-ski kicks off at around 3:30 pm at legendary bars on the slopes 500 meters above St Anton, and at Base Camp.

No skiing day is complete without a visit to at least one of several après-ski bars located on the home runs from Galzig/Gampen to St. Anton. Off the mountain, the partying continues at Base Camp, and a plenty more bars/restaurants in the village.

Nowadays, the apres-ski  scene in the village is fun, but more relaxed, and you can be fined for wandering around the village in ski boots after 8pm! For those just wanting to relax and chill out there are many cafes and bars in which to wind down after a day’s skiing.

Sennhutte

For traditional Austrian style apres-ski, be sure to visit Sennhutte, a popular mountain hut with a big sun terrace. Busy after skiing as well as at lunch times, Sennhutte is located to the right of the blue piste (50) running from the bottom of the Zammermoosbahn chairlift to St Anton. Almost hidden from view, the roof top is visible just off the main piste, so ski slowly or you’ll miss it. Lively Germanic music and abundant humour even if you cannot understand German. Open daily in winter from 10 am to 6 pm. Tel: +43 5446 2048. Website >

St Anton’s legendary apres-ski bar since 1989, the Mooserwirt is rumoured to sell more beer per square metre than any other bar in Austria. The food is excellent and portions are large so it’s a popular place for lunch, but hugely popular and massively busy in peak season, so you need to book a table. The real Mooserwirt Experience begins inside from 3 pm when “Final Countdown” starts, the shutters close, the light show begins and the crowds pile in. The Mooserwirt is soon packed with skiers drinking and dancing on the tables, and singing along to mostly German music. The large outside terrace is jam packed by 4 pm, and also great fun. A “must have” apres-ski experience in St Anton. Opening hours in winter daily from 11 am -3 pm for lunch and 3 pm to 8 pm for full-on apres-ski. Tel: +43 5446 3588. Website >

A traditional mountain restaurant, opposite the Mooserwirt and below Krazy Kanguruh, Griabli has live music from a talented rock, soul and blues band most days. Lively and good fun, but mellow in comparison to either of its more rowdy neighbours, hence a great option for anyone wanting traditionally good apres-ski, not a full-on party. Open daily in winter from 10 am to 10 pm, and a popular apres-ski bar from around 3:30pm. Tel: +43 5446 3673. Website >

Sadly, Pub 37 has been permanently closed since 2024. The smallest bar in St Anton, Pub 37 served craft beer, including Guinness, and spirits, and only accommodated 37 people, but for decades it was one of the most popular bars in the village. A sign of the times, perhaps, as smaller independent establishments are replaced or recycled to create space for bigger businesses, and many skiers will still mourning the loss of Pub 37.

Winter walking in St Anton includes around 80 km of marked trails, mostly in the valley, but also at higher altitude on Galzig. They include easy flat loops, such as the 2.5 km village circuit, and more challenging treks in the Verwall Valley (10 km round-trip) or the 22 km “Stanzertal circuit”. Some winter walking trails run parallel to the cross-country ski network and in places the routes overlap. However, there are also walking trails designated exclusively for winter hikers and snowshoe users. The “Vervall” route winds through the Verwall forest to the Verwall Inn (5km) at the far end of the valley, where you can eat and drink, and call a taxi for the return journey.

St Anton Ski Museum in winter

The St Anton Ski & Local Heritage Museum offers a detailed historic journey through the skiing archives of the Arlberg. Set in an idyllic Alpine villa built by Bernhard Trier in 1912, it is located beside the piste, close to the Galzigbahn lift station. The museum reveals an interesting history of the town, past sporting events and more famous members of “Ski-Club Arlberg”, notably Hannes Schneider (1890-1950) whose statue can be seen in the grounds. Also in the same building and well worth visting is the Restaurant Cafe Museum.

Shopping in St Anton

Aside from an impressive array of shops selling ski equipment, and clothing there is little in the way of retail therapy to satisfy the serious shopper. Most winter guests come to St Anton for skiing and the apres-ski, not to shop, hence unlike some other big name ski resorts, luxury fashion brands are conspicuous by their absence and shops not selling sports equipment are few and far between.

Day Trips to Innsbruck

Trains to Innsbruck, the historic capital of the Tyrol are fast and frequent – about 14 trains running daily and a journey time of under 1 hour 15 minutes. An interesting option for non-skiers especially, and well worth taking time out to visit and explore the historic city centre.
