Apres Ski in Hoch-Ybrig

Hoch-Ybrig après-ski is sorely limited. Beyond the inviting sun terraces of the best mountain restaurants, there’s very little après-ski in the villages, and not much else to see or do in Hoch-Ybrig, apart from good skiing.

The Villages

The villages of Oberiberg and Unteriberg are functional and residential rather than picturesque. Après-ski bars, restaurants, and shops in Hoch-Ybrig are few and far between. The nearest town, Einsiedeln, just a 25-minute drive or bus journey from Hoch-Ybrig, is famous for its Benedictine monastery, but not for après-ski.

Founded in 834, Einsiedeln Abbey is a grand Benedictine monastery and Switzerland’s largest Catholic pilgrimage site. Famous for its ornate 18th-century Baroque architecture, magnificent frescoes and intricate stucco work, and its 15th-century Chapel of Grace, housing a statue of the Black Madonna and drawing around 800,000 pilgrims and tourists each year. The Abbey is a stop on the Swiss route of the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago) and is well worth visiting.

To compensate for the lack of après-ski and amenities in the resort, you may like to spend 1-2 nights in Zurich – a great city for partying, shopping and sightseeing – at the beginning or end of your ski trip. Similarly, if you have a car, the historic city of Lucerne is within easy reach of Hoch-Ybrig and well worth visiting.

Après-Ski Bars & Restaurants

The ski area is the main attraction, and the fact that most skiers come to Hoch-Ybrig for just 1-2 days, mostly at weekends, means there’s less incentive to invest in après-ski bars and restaurants in the villages.

Roggenstock Lodge

The standout exception, however, is the bar, restaurant and sun terrace at the impressive Roggenstock Lodge Hotel in Oberiberg – the best place for après-ski, as well as for upscale accommodation in Hoch-Ybrig.

Relaxed rather than lively, it’s family-friendly, and a fun place to hang out and chill after a day on the slopes. Hotel guests can also relax in the spa and wellness area on the top floor. Address: Roggenstock Lodge, Tschalunstrasse 1, CH-8843 Oberiberg.

Other Activities at Hoch-Ybrig

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is well catered for, with marked trails leaving from both Unteriberg and Oberiberg into the surrounding alpine meadows and forest. The terrain above the resort offers beautiful, relatively gentle snowshoe routes with panoramic views of Pilatus and Säntis.

Cross-Country Skiing

The resort has over 30km of prepared cross-country skiing trails, making it one of the strongest Nordic offerings in the wider region, and winter walking paths are maintained throughout the season for pedestrians who want to enjoy the mountain landscape on foot.

Tobogganing

Tobogganing is a firm family favourite, with dedicated toboggan runs in the Oberiberg area. Equipment can be hired from Holdener Sport.

Ice Fishing

Ice fishing is available on the mountain lakes during the winter months.

Guided Excursions

Ziesel Tours offers guided excursions through the snow aboard electric off-road vehicles, a popular activity for groups and corporate visitors.

Paragliding
