Pizol ski resort is one of Eastern Switzerland's most rewarding ski resorts, and quite possibly its most underrated. A compact ski area in the Heidiland region of Canton St. Gallen, Pizol offers 50km of skiing on uncrowded pistes with splendid views of the Pizol massif and the Rhine Valley. It's also among the closest ski resorts to Zurich.

In contrast to bigger, busier resorts, Pizol is one of Switzerland’s best-kept secrets — a scenic ski area offering wide, open slopes and spectacular views, with a relaxed, uncrowded feel that’s increasingly rare in the Alps. The slopes overlook the Tectonic Arena Sardona, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with views, on clear days, stretching as far as Lake Constance and the Austrian border.

Accessible by gondola, located 4 km from the town of Bad Ragaz, and another gondola at Wangs, the Pizol ski area offers 50km of groomed pistes and ski routes served by 12 lifts up to 2,250 metres. The pistes, which are mostly north-facing, are challenging in parts, especially for freeriding, and reasonably snow-sure throughout the season. An efficient lift system means you spend more time skiing than queuing, and when it snows, the powder stays untracked for longer than in better-known resorts.

For beginners and families with young children, there’s plenty of gentle terrain, including a dedicated children’s area and an excellent Swiss Ski School. Intermediates enjoy long, sweeping descents with panoramic views, and those seeking more challenging skiing can explore black runs, ski routes, and genuinely excellent freeriding on powder days. While strong skiers can easily ski the groomed pistes in 1-2 days, a powder day changes the equation considerably, with lots of easily accessible off-piste terrain in the ski area. Recurring events include night skiing on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the main season.

Apres-ski is quiet and relaxed – definitely not a party destination. Bars in Bad Ragaz may not always offer a lively après-ski atmosphere, but there are excellent restaurants for foodies, including Michelin-starred restaurants and more at the Grand Resort.

What truly sets Pizol apart, however, is the combination of skiing, spa and wellness. Tamina Therme Bad Ragaz has been a thermal spa for over 800 years, its waters rising at 36.5°C from the depths of the Tamina Gorge. A combined ski-and-spa day pass is available at the ski lift ticket offices — making Pizol ski resort one of the rare mountain destinations where a bluebird morning on the pistes can flow easily into an afternoon of steaming thermal pools.

Pizol’s ski season runs from late November or early December to early April, and getting there is easy. Two convenient base areas — Bad Ragaz and Wangs — offer flexible arrival options for skiers coming from different directions. Logistically, Pizol ski resort is easily accessible from Zurich in around 1 hour and 30 minutes by train or one hour by car. Direct trains from Zurich reach Bad Ragaz station in around 75 minutes, with services running roughly every hour, and easy transfers by road and rail from Zurich Airport.
