Set on the slopes above Saalbach centre and walkable there, the Hotel Hinterhag , self-designated ‘Art & Ski-in’ to announce its style and position, is a relatively compact, more than comfortable and unusual 4-star.

Built out of old and natural timber inside in Alpine chalet style but with a three storey glazed entrance façade, it represents a refreshingly striking piece of architecture, which is entirely comfortable with its surroundings on the beautiful low wooded slopes above Saalbach on the Kohlmais. And this reflects the spirit and culture of the Fersterer family who have owned and run the Hinterhag since before the last war: they were foresters and lumberjacks.

The wood theme continues inside in simple but stunning rooms and suites with panoramic mountain aspect windows, some with balconies and freshly furnished with smart ensuite bathrooms. Free Wi-Fi, flat screen TVs and mini bars are provided. The common parts of the Hinterhag are liberally adorned by striking local art and wooden sculpture.

A healthy and full buffet breakfast is served in a beautifully appointed modern long room with panoramic windows overlooking the wooded hills: a simply stunning way to start your day. Dinner in the older restaurant is a sophisticated Austrian affair and is excellent. And to add to the mountain experience here, just a few metres above the hotel, is the Hinterhag Alm. This old mountain hut which serves great self-service mountain lunches is one of the key on-mountain après-ski venues in Saalbach.

The health spa at the Hinterhag maintains the wood theme and delivers an excellent experience from its indoor pool, panoramic sauna and sleigh beds to relax on after.
