Getting to Flumserberg

Getting to Flumserberg in Eastern Switzerland is easy by road or rail from Zurich, and from other directions via Sargans. Flumserberg is in the Heidiland region between Zurich and Chur, and the journey from Zurich airport takes less than 90 minutes by car or around 2 hours by public transport.

Flumserberg is among the most accessible ski resorts from Zurich, sitting approximately 90km from the city centre and served by a direct, no-change train connection.

The resort offers two distinct access points: Unterterzen in the valley (425m), where the SeeJet gondola departs directly opposite the train station; and the mountain road from Flums (451m) to the Tannenheim and Tannenboden base areas. The choice of access point will largely depend on where you are staying and how you are travelling.

Nearest Airports to Flumserberg

Zurich Airport, approximately 100km from Flumserberg, is the natural gateway for international visitors. Direct flights serve Zurich from most major European hubs, and there are plenty of long-haul routes.

Transfers from Zurich airport to Flumserberg take around 1 hour 15 minutes by car in normal conditions, or around two hours by public transport, including the SeeJet gondola (during daytime operations) to Tannenboden. If arriving by rail at night, take the train to Flums, then continue by bus to Flumserberg.

For most skiers, the train is the most practical option, but private transfers make sense for groups, families with young children or those arriving late at night.

Getting to Flumserberg by Rail

Flumserberg is one of the easiest Swiss ski resorts to reach by train, thanks to reliable rail connections from multiple directions, including Zurich, Chur, St Gallen and Buchs.

The IR35 (Aare Linth service) runs direct from Zurich HB to Unterterzen in 58 minutes with no change of train — an unusually straightforward rail connection for a ski resort. From Zurich Airport, take the SBB train to Zurich HB (approximately 10 minutes) and connect to the IR35; the total door-to-gondola journey time to the slopes is between 1 hour 30 minutes and 1 hour 40 minutes.

At Unterterzen station, the SeeJet gondola base station is directly opposite the platform exit — no bus, no transfer, just a 2-minute walk to the SeeJet gondola. The SeeJet is a two-stage gondola running seamlessly through Oberterzen to Flumserberg Tannenboden; stay on board, and you arrive at Tannenboden in one uninterrupted 20-minute ride. Swiss Travel Pass holders travel free on all SBB services and benefit from discounted lift passes at many Swiss resorts.

If you are staying lower in Flumserberg Tannenheim (or prefer rail and bus), take the IR35 train to Flums (just over an hour from Zurich), then take the bus (Line 441) to Flumserberg Tannenheim or Tannenboden (20-30 minutes).

If flying into Zurich, the train journey from the airport to Zurich Hauptbahnhof (main station) takes around 10 minutes. Alternatively, take a direct train (IR13), non-stop from Zurich airport to Sargans (2 hours), then the 441 bus from Sargans to Flumserberg (50 minutes).

Flumserberg Bus Services

PostBus Line 441 runs from the railway stations in Sargans and Flums to Flumserberg Tannenboden, and Flumserberg, serving both Tannenheim and Tannenboden, and departing from Sargans and Flums every 30 minutes. Line 439 also runs between the gondola base stations at Tannenheim and Tannenboden, and is free of charge during the ski season.

Driving to Flumserberg

Driving from Zurich is quicker and offers more flexibility than public transport, and easier if you also want to enjoy 1-2 days skiing at Pizol (50km of pistes), just 30 minutes by car from Flumserberg. 

From Zurich city centre or Zurich Airport, take the A3 motorway southbound towards Chur. For Unterterzen and the SeeJet gondola, exit at Unterterzen/Quarten and follow signs to the gondola base station parking.

For the resort villages (Tannenheim and Tannenboden), continue to the Flums exit and follow the mountain road from Flums to Tannenboden, approximately 20 minutes by car. Total drive time from Zurich Airport to the Flumserberg villages is approximately 1 hour 15–30 minutes, depending on traffic and road conditions.

Winter tyres are strongly recommended for the mountain road from Flums to Tannenboden, and snow chains in heavy snow conditions. Driving distances and estimated drive times to Flumserberg from further afield are approximately as follows:

Parking in Flumserberg

Hotels in Flumserberg (Tannenboden and Tannenboden) typically offer free on-site parking for guests. Additionally, parking options for day visitors and guests include the underground car park at Tannenboden and the outdoor car park at Tannenheim, for a fee. Also, free outdoor car parks near the gondola lift stations at Unterterzen and Oberterzen.

Paid parking is available at both Tannenboden and Tannenheim, as well as at Oberterzen and Unterterzen for those using the SeeJet gondola. Parking is charged between 7:00am and 5:00pm and is free of charge in the evenings. The Tannenheim car park has approximately 270 spaces. Arrive early on peak weekends and Swiss school holidays, because the Flums-side car parks can fill by mid-morning.
